Mary Evans joined the BSA administrative team in July 2014. She earned a bachelor of music education degree from Ohio Northern University and a master of music in conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). She began her career teaching choral and instrumental music in the Indiana public schools and college-level music courses to incarcerated men in Ohio before moving to Baltimore in 1996. Evans continued her work with the incarcerated population by teaching adult basic education, eventually landing at the Alternative Learning Center (A.L.C.), where she founded a steel band that performed all over Baltimore. While at A.L.C., Evans earned a degree in administration from Goucher College.
She began her tenure with Baltimore City Schools in 1998, and was an integral part of the Patterson High School leadership team for eight years. At Patterson, she worked primarily with 9th graders but also supervised the Student Support Team and the Special Education Department. During her time there, she also co-authored a curriculum aimed at helping students develop a stronger sense of empowerment and purpose.
Evans is a sought-out expert in the field of student support and has presented on relevant topics at national conventions. She’s also the first face that greets our students outside of the building each and every school day.
